Deep house is a difficult sound to get right – it really has to be imbued with proper feelings and atmosphere if it is to succeed. A label that has always done it right is Behrouz’s Do Not Sit, who now round up the best of last year’s tunes.
It was a busy 12 months for the crew with a residency at Heart in Ibiza, as well as parties in other locations and of course a steady stream of sick EPs. They are all heady affairs for those who like to dream and get lost – so it’s no wonder that Behrouz is inspired by real melody and the fantasy experiences of cult festivals like Burning Man.
Two of the standout tunes come from new signings Death on the Balcony – a heady and getaway tune comes in the form of the perfectly angelic Opia -and Rhythms of the Universe, featuring yawning chords and gently fluttering toms that are delicately placed over pillowy drums.
Myagi is in fine form with the modal eastern sousing melodic leads of his Desert Flower which is truly enchanting ,and Re.You’s Karpfengasse is more edgy and dark, with a rasping lead and icy hi hats. For proper underground grooves that take you in a rocky cave, The Slide from Wild Dark is the one. It’s utterly captivating and impossible deep yet atmsopheric.
There’s a lot to love here, from superb evocative grooves to more direct but still deep house rollers. Lap it up and keep an eye out for many more in 2020.
